A Bit of Blurb on the Tradition of Christening Gifts from Godparents

Been asked to become a little one’s godparents? Feeling a bit nervous about it? Don’t be. Feel honoured. It’s a blessing to become godparents. You’ve been asked to be the second mum and dad people to turn to, ask advice from. People to spend time with.

Being godparents doesn’t make you the child’s legal guardians; your role is more of a support role. You’re interested in the development and nurturing of the youngster. Given that you stand as the second parents, it’s important to bestow your godchild with a little something that reflects your love for them, don’t you think?

Where Did the Godparents Gift-Giving Tradition Come From?

Believe it or not, the custom began donkey's years ago, way back in the fourth century, when Christians were frightened of being prosecuted by non-Christians. New members were expected to be sponsored by the current members of the church. Parents asked their nearest and dearest friends to sponsor the children they planned to christen. These sponsors were known as ‘patrinus’, meaning ‘godfather’. A christening gift from godparents symbolised the presents given by the three Magi to Jesus Christ when he was born. And there you have it. This is what initiated the tradition of giving gifts for a christening.

The Significance of Silver

The most traditional christening ideas godparents can give are those made of silver. This began in the Tudor times and expanded into the Victorian era where gifts of fundamental value were bestowed to the child. But why silver? Silver was believed to be a good investment for the little one as it symbolised independence for their later years.

Thanks to this tradition, items made of silver such as cutlery, silver spoons, rattles, tankards, napkin rings and egg cups were given as christening gift ideas from godparents. This is what the saying, “Born with a silver spoon in the mouth” represents: the wealth to which the bambino was born into.
