Arsenal was founded in 1886 and has since become one of the most accomplished football teams in England. The club has competed in the top flight since the end of the First World War, winning over twenty major honours. Success began in the 1930s, when the Gunners won two FA Cups and five First Division titles. Arsenal faced a period of decline in the early 1960s, but became triumphant once more when club physiotherapist Bertie Lee was appointed manager in 1966. The Gunners won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in1970, followed by a domestic league-cup double in 1971. Arsenal was only the second team to achieve the double in the twentieth century. Recent success has owed much to manager Arsene Wenger, who joined the club in 1996. He revolutionised Arsenal with a new style of football and an influx of foreign talent. Highlights of Wenger’s reign have included the unbeaten Premiership season of 2004 and further league-cup doubles.
The club was named ‘Arsenal’ as it was founded by workers of the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich. This is also the reason for the nickname “The Gunners" and the cannon that appears on the club badge. The crest originally featured three cannons pointing northwards from an aerial view, but it later changed to a single cannon, pointed towards the west.
Arsenal was based at Highbury stadium for ninety-three years. The club wanted to expand the ground, but was unable to do so as it was located in a residential area. In 2006, the Gunners moved to the Emirates Stadium in Holloway. The Emirates was purpose built and has a capacity of over 60,000 spectators, making it the fifth largest stadium in the United Kingdom. The ground was named after its sponsor, Emirates Airlines, and cost around £430 million to build. The first game to be played at the stadium was a testimonial for then-captain Dennis Bergkamp, played against his former side Ajax. Thierry Henry scored the first Arsenal goal, following a Klass-Jan Huntelaar strike. The Gunners went on to win the match 2-1.

The book contains exciting high-scoring matches, including the 7-1 defeat of Aston Villa in 1935 and the 5-1 win against Inter Milan in 2003.
