Liverpool FC is one of the most successful football clubs in England, having won over thirty major domestic honours and numerous European Cups. The Reds formed in 1892 when Everton left Anfield due to a dispute over rent. Three of Everton’s first teamers remained behind and Anfield owner John Houlding formed a new team to fill his stadium. Liverpool had won five First Division titles by the 1950s, but then spent a period in the Second Division. The club won promotion in 1969 under the management of Bill Shankly and ‘Shanks’ went on to become one of the most iconic figures in the club’s history. His charisma and no-nonsense approach revitalised Liverpool and they went on to win three First Division titles, two FA Cups and the 1973 UEFA Cup. When Shankly suddenly retired in 1974, he was replaced by his assistant, Bob Paisley, who achieved even more success. Paisley won twenty-one major trophies during his nine seasons in charge and the Reds dominated English football with a string of stunning players.
Liverpool is also famous for their European success, winning four European Cups between 1977 and 1984. The Reds won a fifth major European title in 2005 in what many describe as the best final ever played. Liverpool was losing 3-0 to AC Milan at half time, but Captain Steven Gerrard inspired a miraculous comeback and the Reds went on to win the trophy in a penalty shoot-out.
Liverpool FC is known as ‘The Reds’ due to the colour of the club’s home kit. Liverpool had originally played in red and white, but Bill Shankly introduced an all-red strip in 1964. He thought that it would make the team seem bigger and more intimidating, as ‘red is the colour of danger and power’. Shankly also hung the famous “This is Anfield" sign in the stadium’s player tunnel. He did this to remind the Liverpool players who they were playing for and to remind the opposition what was in store for them.
Anfield is one of the most famous stadiums in world football. Notable features include a statue of Bill Shankly, the Hillsborough memorial and iron gates named after Shankly and Paisley. The Shankly Gates also feature the club anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone". Anfield is often said to have a mythical quality and the ground is well known for its impressive atmosphere. This is largely created by the Kop Stand, where the most loyal and vocal Liverpool supporters are located. The Spion Kop once held a record 30,000 supporters, but capacity was affected by the Taylor Report, which demanded all-seated stadiums following the Hillsborough tragedy. The ground now has an overall capacity of 45,370 and it is classified as an ‘elite stadium’ by UEFA.
