Brief History of Manchester United
Manchester United was founded in 1878, as Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway FC. The club craved a fresh start in the early 1900s, as financial trouble had almost ruined the team. In 1902, the side became officially known as Manchester United and the club colours changed from green and gold to red and white. The transformation injected new life into the team and financial security helped Man United to build towards success. Over the next sixty years, the Red Devils won five First Division titles and two FA Cups, and in 1968, Man U became the first English side to win the European Cup. Alex Ferguson arrived as manager from Aberdeen FC in 1986 and he has since led Manchester United to over twenty major honours.
Did you know…
Manchester United FC began to be known as the Red Devils in 1958, following the Munich air disaster. The team had previously been nicknamed The Busby Babes, but as this was no longer deemed appropriate, Matt Busby searched for a new name. He settled upon the Red Devils after watching Salford rugby club tour France with this nickname, whilst wearing red shirts. Busby liked the intimidating name and a devil logo soon began to appear on club merchandise, such as the official match programme and Man United scarves.
Man U play their home games at Old Trafford. The stadium holds 76,212 people, the largest capacity in the country after Wembley, and it was awarded a five star rating by UEFA. Bobby Charlton nicknamed the ground “The Theatre of Dreams"and in addition to hosting Manchester United games, Old Trafford has held numerous international fixtures, the 2003 Champions League final and even the 2000 rugby world cup.
