Leeds United was founded in 1919 when the original Leeds City team was forced to disband. The club experienced ups and down during their first fifty years in the Football League. One of the highlights of the side was a strongly admired backline, which formed during the 1940s. In the 1950s, John Charles emerged as one of the finest all-round football players in the game. He played as both central defender and striker and the Leeds United team began to be built around his talent. Charles moved to Juventus in 1958 for a world record fee of £65,000.
Leeds United captain Don Revie was appointed as player-manager in 1961 and he revolutionised the club. With Revie in charge, United won two First Division Championships and they finished as runners-up on five occasions. Revie’s team also won both domestic cups and they reached the 1975 European Cup final. Revie left Leeds United in 1975 and although the club initially struggled in his absence, Leeds went on to win another First Division title in 1992. Leeds finished in the top five consistently between 1996 and 2001. David O’Leary led the team to the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2000 and the Champions League semi-final in 2001.
Our Personalised Calendars feature twelve reproduced match reports from our extensive newspaper archives, including European ties, league fixtures and domestic cup games. The calendar can start from the month of your choice and this gift is a terrific idea for any Leeds United fan.
Our Personalised Leeds United Calendars feature the stunning First Division title win of 1969 and the 1-0 victory against Arsenal in the centenary FA Cup final.
The Calendar Gift also celebrates Leeds’ terrific success in Europe. Coverage begins with the 2-1 win against Real Zaragoza in the first leg of the 1966 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup semi-final. This was United’s first season in Europe and the first of many successful continental campaigns. Leeds won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968, beating Ferencvaros in the final. The club repeated their win in 1971, this time beating Juventus to the trophy.
Leeds United became a force in Europe once more in the new millennium. David O’Leary led the team to the UEFA Cup semi-final in 2000, despite Leeds being given an extremely difficult draw in the group stages. One of the best matches in this campaign was the 6-0 thrashing of Besiktas, which we include in our A3 Calendar. We also incorporate the 3-0 win against Maritimo from the 2001 Champions League competition. Leeds United again went on to reach the semi-final.
In addition to European ties and domestic trophies, the Leeds United Football Calendar features a selection of thrilling league performances. In 1973, Leeds beat West Ham 4-1. The club enjoyed a terrific 3-4 victory against Blackburn Rovers in 1997 and United humbled Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 in 2006.
Each Football Calendar contains the following reproduced newspaper reports:
