Brief History of The Open
Golf originated in Scotland during the twelfth century, as shepherds used to knock stones into rabbit holes using sticks. The game of golf developed over time and the inaugural Open Championships took place at Prestwick in 1860. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews began hosting the competition in 1868 and helped to raise funds for the famous Claret trophy. The Open has since been held at a variety of traditional links courses, loosely alternating between Scotland and England. The tournament was also once held in Northern Ireland, at the Royal Portrush Golf Club. St Andrews remains a favourite course for competitors, as the town is internationally recognised as the ‘Home of Golf’.
The Open is one of the four ‘majors’ in golf, but it continues to stand in a class of its own. The history and tradition of this golf tournament makes it a special week for the competitors and it is the only major that takes place outside of America.
Highlights of The Open Golf Book
Our Personalised Open Golf Books stretch back to the 1930s, when English golfers such as Henry Cotton and Richard Burton were enjoying Championship success. American golf star Sam Snead won the first British Open following the war in 1946, but this win preceded a dramatic reduction in American participation at the Open. There was a boom in prize money on the American tour, which led to US competitors preferring to compete at home.
The Open was subsequently dominated by iconic champions Bobby Locke and five-time Open winner Peter Thomson, who came from South Africa and Australia respectively. The Gift Book follows their success in the 1950s and the famous win of Ben Hogan. Hogan was an incredibly successful American golfer, who came to the Open for the first and only time in 1953 and won the competition.
The Golf Book moves on to the era of Player, Palmer and Nicklaus, as US participation began to steadily rise. Jack Nicklaus enjoyed tremendous success at the Open, winning the competition three times and finishing in the top five places a staggering sixteen times. Another American who enjoyed a terrific record at the Open was five-time champion Tom Watson. The gifts include a fabulous report of Watson and Nicklaus’ “Duel in the Sun" in 1977, which many fans consider to be the finest contest in the history of the Open Championship.
Golf enthusiasts also became captivated by Spanish player Seve Ballesteros, who won the competition three times. The Open Golf Book contains all of Ballesteros’ popular victories, including his terrific battle with Tom Watson in 1984. Other champions of the 1980s and 1990s included Sandy Lyle, Greg Norman and British golf legend, Nick Faldo. Tiger Woods claimed his first Open title as part of his “Tiger Slam" in 2000. The gift book features an interesting article about the records that Woods smashed during his win. Woods has enjoyed further Open success over the years and Irish golfer Padraig Harrington has also been a back-to-back Open champion.
