Enjoy a Wonderful Newspaper History of Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. It is a popular spectator event for sports fans and tennis enthusiasts, but also for people who simply enjoy the special atmosphere. Our Personalised Wimbledon Books celebrate the traditional British tournament, featuring reproduced newspaper coverage of various finals and records.

These gift books are terrific presents for any Wimbledon fan. The gifts contain newspaper articles stretching back to the early 1900s and newspaper reports focus on a variety of legendary tennis champions, such as Laver, Court, Navratilova, Graf, Borg, Sampras and Federer. The Wimbledon Books are smartly presented so the gifts can be kept as a special piece of tennis memorabilia. Below you will find more information about the history of the Championships and the contents of our Wimbledon Tennis Books. We also suggest other personalised sports presents and alternative Wimbledon gifts.

Brief History of The Wimbledon Championships

Wimbledon began as the All England Croquet Club in 1868. Lawn tennis was invented in 1874 by Major Walter Clopten and the new sport was added to the All England Club one year later. The inaugural Wimbledon Championship took place in 1877 and Spencer Gore became the first man to win the title. A Ladies’ Championship was set up in 1884 and international players increased around the turn of the century.

The Championships now attracts players from all over the world and almost 50,000 spectators per day. Wimbledon has a special atmosphere that is different from any other tennis tournament. The history of the event is maintained through a number of traditions, such as a strict white dress code, no play on the middle Sunday, ‘strawberries and cream’ and spectators queuing overnight. Players can also enjoy the custom of renting houses in the Wimbledon Village, allowing a break from living out of suitcases at hotels. One of the biggest traditions of the tournament is the rain delay. However, a retractable roof has now been added to Centre Court.

Highlights of the Wimbledon Tennis Book

Our Personalised Wimbledon Books stretch back to 1913, when Tony Wilding won his fourth Gentlemen’s title. The gifts then move through the French success of the 1920s and the golden era of British tennis, which took place in the 1930s. Newspaper coverage includes reports on the double win for Great Britain in 1934, as Fred Perry and Dorothy Round won both Wimbledon singles titles. British success preceded decades of American and Australian dominance. The gift book includes Helen Wills Moody’s eighth championship win and the triumphs of tennis legends, such as Margaret (Court) Smith, Althea Gibson, Rod Laver, Chris Evert and Billie Jean King.

Despite the reign of Australian and American tennis players at this time, there was a small selection of famous wins for other nations. Maria Bueno was a popular competitor from Brazil who won the Wimbledon title for the first time in 1959. Our tennis book also includes a report on her third victory in 1964, which was especially dramatic as she eventually beat Margaret Smith with a half-volley that came off the wood of her racquet. The gifts also include the British success of Ann Jones in 1969 and Virginia Wade in 1977, plus the emergence of Martina Navratilova and Bjorn Borg.

Bjorn Borg won his fifth Wimbledon title in 1980. He played against tennis bad bay John McEnroe in the final and this match was known for many years as the greatest final of all time. In addition to this famous match, the 1980s included wins for McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Pat Cash, Stefan Edberg and a seventeen-year-old Boris Becker. The Wimbledon Tennis Books also contain Navratilova’s fifth and sixth titles.

Wimbledon in the 1990s was famous for the incredible runs of Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf. The gift books also feature the record-breaking victory of Martina Hingis - who in 1997 became the youngest ever Wimbledon Champion at just fifteen-years of age - and emotional wins for Andre Agassi and Jana Novotna. Roger Federer was the King of the Championships between 2003 and 2007 and our gift books incorporate all of his winning finals. Although he would regain the title, Federer’s reign was broken by rival Rafael Nadal in 2008. John McEnroe admitted that this phenomenal contest had surpassed his 1980 match with Borg. Nadal’s victory is now generally considered to be the greatest tennis match ever played and a report of this contest is one of the highlights of the Wimbledon Book.
