Sheffield United formed in 1889 following a meeting at the Adelphi hotel - now known as the Crucible Theatre, home to the Snooker World Championships. Like so many other football teams, Sheffield United started out as a cricket club. The plan was to introduce football as a way of keeping the side together during the off-season and a means of guaranteeing revenue through the winter months. Football soon became the main sport at the club however, and by 1975, cricket was no longer played at the club's grounds. Bramall Lane is the oldest football stadium in the world. It was first used in 1862 and in 1878, the Blades played in the first ever match to use floodlights. The stadium has witnessed many magical moments and over the years, as Sheffield United has won the First Division title and multiple FA Cups.
Our Personalised Calendars look back at some of the finest matches Sheffield United has played over the past hundred years. Featuring a selection of match reports from our newspaper archives, these A3 Calendars can start from the month of your choice and they are a brilliant gift for any fan of the Blades.
This Personalised Football Calendar begin in 1936 with the 1-2 win against Fulham in the FA Cup semi-final. The club would go on to lose the final to Arsenal, but the successful cup run helped the Blades gain momentum and push for a return to the top flight over the next two years.
Although Sheffield United were beaten by Arsenal on this occasion, the Blades have enjoyed several giant-killings in cup competitions. The A3 Calendar contains the 2-1 victory over Manchester United from the FA Cup campaign of 1993. It also features the shock 2-1 win against Liverpool in the first leg of the 2003 Worthington Cup semi-final. One of Sheffield United's best cup performances however, took place in the third round of the FA Cup in 2005. The Blades fought back from a one goal deficit to beat Aston Villa 3-1, earning much acclaim from the media and football fans in general.
In addition to domestic cup matches, our Calendar Gift also covers several thrilling league fixtures. In 1963 the Blades beat Liverpool 3-0, in 1973 the club shocked Arsenal 5-0, and in 1993, Sheffield United thrashed Tottenham by the incredible score of 6-0.
